WHEN A DEATH OCCURS
What To Do When A Death Occurs
The loss of a loved one can be overwhelming and knowing what to do next isn't always easy. The caring professionals at Grenoble Family Funeral Homes & Crematory are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to guide your family through every step of the process.
If Death Occurs at Home
If your loved one is under hospice care:
- Contact the hospice nurse directly.
- The hospice team will make the necessary arrangements and notify the appropriate authorities.
- Ask the hospice representative to contact the Grenoble Funeral Home location of choice.
If your loved one is not under hospice care:
- Call 911 or your local non-emergency communications center.
- Emergency personnel or law enforcement will respond and make the official pronouncement of death.
- Ask them to contact the Grenoble Funeral Home location of choice.
Once we are notified, our staff will respond promptly, bring your loved one into our care, and arrange a convenient time to meet with your family.
If Death Occurs at a Hospital, Nursing Home, or Long-Term Care Facility
- The facility staff will complete the necessary procedures and official pronouncement.
- Ask the facility to contact the Grenoble Funeral Home location of choice.
You may have designated a preferred funeral home during admission. We recommend periodically confirming that the Grenoble Funeral Home location of choice is listed as your preferred provider.
After notification, our staff will promptly bring your loved one into our care and schedule a time to discuss funeral or cremation arrangements with your family.
If the Medical Examiner or Local Coroner Is Involved
In some situations, the Coroner or Medical Examiner may require an examination or autopsy before releasing your loved one.
- Inform the Medical Examiner's Office that you have selected Grenoble Family Funeral Homes & Crematory.
- The legal next of kin may be required to authorize the release.
Once authorization is complete and we have been notified, we will bring your loved one into our care and assist your family with the next steps.
If Death Occurs Away From Home
If a death occurs while traveling or outside the local area, contact the Grenoble Funeral Home location of choice as soon as possible before making any other arrangements.
Our experienced staff can coordinate transportation, handle the necessary paperwork, and manage the details on your behalf, often simplifying the process and reducing unnecessary expenses.
