Lawrence J. "Larry" Hornberger Obituary

Lawrence J. “Larry” Hornberger, 57 of Mazeppa, died Saturday, April 29, 2023 at his home.

He was born September 29, 1965 in Philadelphia, a son of the late Lillie Mae (Gibbons) Hornberger and Lawrence G. Hornberger, who survives. On June 15, 1996 he married the love of his life, the former Rhonda Day, who survives.

Larry was a 1983 graduate of Upper Darby High School. In 1987 he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from York College. He went on to earn his master’s degree in reading from Bloomsburg University in 1999. Larry invested 28 years of his life at Mifflinburg Area School District as a third grade teacher, where he positively impacted the lives of hundreds of students over the years.

He was a member of Christ Wesleyan Church in Milton, PA. In 2018, after the devastating eruption of Volcan de Fuego, Larry joined members of C.W.C. and World Hope in a mission trip to Guatemala. Larry would often tell stories of how the mission changed from rescue to recovery. This event greatly impacted his life.

Larry’s passion in life was travel. He worked for many years as a youth leader for People 2 People. He took students from all over the country to new places, opening their eyes to the world around them. Larry loved coaching both Noah and Julia’s AYSO soccer teams when they were young. He was a game manager for the Mifflinburg Boys Lacrosse Team. He also ran the announcement board for Mifflinburg Boys Basketball. During Mifflinburg football season, you could find him selling tickets, always taking time to talk to former students.  He loved walking and hiking. He could often be seen walking the little village of Mazeppa, waving to familiar faces as they drove by. Larry loved family trips to Disney and Rehoboth Beach. He was a huge fan of Harry Potter and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Larry could not have been more proud of his children. In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-love, Noah and Katie Hornberger, of Williamsport: and the apple of his eye, daughter, Julia Hornberger, of Mazeppa; and a brother, William Hornberger of Hanover.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 20th at Christ Wesleyan Church in Milton, PA. Visitation will be held from 9-12, with a service starting at noon.
