William “Bill” Devitt VI, 95, of Houston, TX, died peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026 at Heart to Heart Hospice, Houston, TX, after a brief illness.
Born March 8, 1931, in Philadelphia, he was the eldest son of the late William V and Florence (Krauser) Devitt. Bill grew up at Devitt’s Camp in Allenwood, PA, which was formerly a tuberculosis hospital founded by his grandfather, Dr. William Devitt.
He was a 1952 graduate of Penn State University. Following graduation Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a train engineer taking troops across Germany. After his service, he furthered his education at Colorado School of Mines, where he received a Master of Engineering and started his career as a mining engineer.
In 1963 he moved to Houston, TX and had a career with various mining and oil companies. Bill was vice president of IMCO services and several other smaller companies.
He moved back to Pennsylvania in his later years and worked for Penn Rock Corporation until he retired at the age of 66.
Bill married Donna Childs in 1953 and had 3 children but divorced in 1965. He then met Virginia “Ginger” Bridge and her two children, and they married in 1967. After Ginger passed away in 1996, he met Dorothy Deroche. They married in 1997 and lived happily together until she passed away in 2018. Bill then moved back to Texas, where he spent the remaining years near his children in Houston and Austin.
In his spare time, Bill enjoyed reading, fishing, travelling, and watching the History channel. He was also in Ripley’s Believe It or Not newspaper for having a full museum of Indian artifacts at the age of 15.
Surviving is brother Jack Devitt, sons William “Billy” Devitt VII and Donald “Chip” Bridge, daughters Debra Devitt and Wendy Devitt Raymer, as well as eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 27 at Grenoble Funeral Home & Crematory, 308 Main St. Watsontown, where a funeral will be held at 11.
Burial with full military honors will follow in Allenwood Cemetery.
