Shirley Ann Hoffman, 77, Mifflinburg, passed away at her home after an abrupt, but courageous battle with cancer, leaving a void in her family that they cannot fill.
She was born on February 21, 1948 in Lewisburg, to the late Forest and Leah (Brightbill) Catherman, Jr., and was raised helping with her family’s business, Catherman’s Candy. On February 9, 1969 Shirley married the late Alvin Howard Hoffman, Jr., who predeceased her January 2, 2009. Together they celebrated nearly 40 years of marriage.
Shirley attended Lewisburg Area High School, graduating in 1967 before studying Cosmetology at Sunbury Beauty School. Shirley was the proud owner of Shirley Hoffman’s Beauty Shoppe in Mifflinburg for over 40 years, retiring in December of 2021. Following retirement, she worked as an aid for VNA for the past four years.
Shirley was a kind hearted woman who loved to spend time helping others. She was a volunteer with Millmont Lions Club and Haven to Home Canine Rescue for many years. As a young adult, Shirley and her husband were avid square dancers with Pennwheeler’s Square Dance Club. Shirley was a long time Longaberger basket collector and consultant. In her spare time, Shirley loved the game of Bingo and was known to startle other player’s with her enthusiastic “Bingo!”.
She was a beloved mother to Consuelo Hoffman, of Mifflinburg, Misty Scolese, of Millmont, and Jason (Ashley) Hoffman, of Mt Pleasant Mills.
One of Shirley’s greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren, Larissa Young, Kirsten (David) Walter, Erika (Joseph Hadden) Christianson, Dakota Christianson, Heather Scolese, and Alexa Hoffman. Shirley was blessed with four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Walter, Addison Hadden, Michaela Bowersox, and Emmett Hadden. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will never forget the love she brought to their lives. She is also survived by her siblings, Sylvia (Tony) Leonard, Karon Ricker, and Barry (Deb) Catherman, and sister-in-law, Cindy (Ken) Yoder.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by, brother-in-law, Gene Ricker, and son-in-law, Christopher Scolese.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, April 18 at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral service will be held at 11 with Pastor David McCarty, of New Hope Lutheran Brother Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in Mifflinburg Cemetery.
If so desired, contributions in Shirley’s name may be made to a local animal society, to honor her love of all animals, but especially her love of dachshunds.
