Madalyn Joyce (Forbes) Berger, 91, of Lewisburg, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Milton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a guest for the past several months.
She was born July 13, 1926 in Milton, a daughter of the late Charles L. and Minnie Mae (Solomon) Forbes. On July 14, 1945 Madalyn married Paul P. Berger, Jr. who preceded her in death March 29, 1985. Later that same year she lost her beloved daughter, Kathy.
Despite the tragic loss of her husband and daughter within months of each other, she persevered and continued to work with her son, Gary to maintain their household.
Madalyn was a graduate of Milton High School.
She was a former member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg and current member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Potts Grove.
Madalyn enjoyed her family and spent many nights and evenings sitting by the side of her daughter, Kathy, who was one of the original Union County 911 dispatchers. She was active in the William Cameron Engine Company Auxiliary, supporting her husband and daughter in providing service to the community. She also enjoyed stuffed animals, especially bears and NASCAR. In later years, Madalyn re-connected with her high school friend, Ray Meckley, formerly of Potts Grove and they enjoyed much time together in their senior years after they both were widowed.
Surviving are a son, Gary L. Berger, of Lewisburg; and her friend, Ray Meckley and his family, who became her extended family.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two daughters, Cheryl A. and Kathy D. Berger; a son, Barry W. Berger, a grandson, Barry W. Berger, Jr; two sisters, Anna Hoch and Marian Morgan; and a brother, Robert Forbes.
Friends will be received from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, S. Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Glasoe, officiating.
Burial will be held privately in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Michelle, her in-home care giver as well as staff at Milton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in particular the third shift West Wing staff, who provided her final care.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions in Madalyn’s name be made to the American Cancer Society, 1948 E. Third St. Williamsport, PA 17701, since that disease took her husband and daughter way too early.
