Jeane H. Smay, 96, of Muncy, died Monday, May 12, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family.
Born May 18, 1928 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Merlin and Eva (Harris) Gulliver.
Jeane was a graduate of Myers High School. Having always wanting to be a teacher, she enrolled in the School of Education at Penn State. In her junior and senior years, she enjoyed living in the new Delta Zeta Sorority suite.
Jeane liked to travel and visited the great museums of Paris, Florence, Rome and Mexico City. She spent many hours painting the covered bridges of Central Pennsylvania.
Jeane taught many years in the elementary level until being moved to an elementary art position, which was her favorite assignment. She studied art at Temple University and Marywood University.
Following retirement, she married Rev. R. Bruce Smay. They moved to Muncy in 1989. For twenty-three years they led a Fall retreat at Wesley Forest Camp.
Jeane was very involved in the First United Methodist Church of Muncy, helping start the Easter egg project, designing and hand sewing sanctuary banners and teaching a painting class for fourteen years.
Following Bruce’s death on February 16, 2019, she moved to the home of her stepson, John and Marta Smay, who provided a lovely apartment for her in Muncy. Jeane was loved by her step daughter, Kathy and husband, Kevin Baer, of Fort Wayne, IN.
She was very proud of her grandson, Tyler Smay and his wife, Jessica and granddaughter, Gabrielle and her husband Alex Marconnet; and her six great grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church, 602 S. Market St., Muncy, where the funeral will be held at 7 p.m. with her pastor, the Rev. Richard Robinson, officiating.
