Grant W. “John” Barto, 87, of Watsontown, died Friday, August 18, 2023 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born July 25, 1936 in Williamsport, a son of the late Grant and Mildred (Feister) Barto. He married the former Joan H. VanKirk. Together they celebrated 29 years of marriage before her death August 28, 1994.
John graduated from Lycoming County Public Schools and received two certificates from the former Williamsport Area Community College, now Penn College. He served honorably with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. John worked and retired from PennDot after 27 ½ years.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially doing yard work, mowing and snow shoveling. John was also an avid fisherman. He was fond of reading and watching John Wayne movies. Most of all John loved spending time with his family.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Laurie Barto, of Watsontown; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Ken Snyder, of Exchange; a brother & sister-in-law, James and Linda Newman, of Turbotville; and two grandchildren, Caitlin and Jacob Barto.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 23 at Grenoble Funeral Home and Crematory, 308 Main St., Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James R. Ritter, officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow in the Watsontown Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions in John’s name be made to the American Heart Association, online at www.heart.org .
