So sorry to hear of Bud's passing! I knew father Harold and brother Steve from the years I lived in Lock Haven and worked on the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad with Steve, and ran with the Castanea Fire Company with father Harold.

May the Lord comfort the family at this time!

Monday evening (10/23) was a solemn day for our railroad, to say the least. Shadows of gray echoed through the overcast sky as my engineer and I left our Bellefonte terminal for what seemed like just another day on the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad. But this one was different. Over the weekend we had received the uneventful news that our beloved coworker Bud had passed away unexpectedly, news which shocked us all.

As a result of Bud's passing, I was reassigned from our daylight local to Bud's usual assignment--the evening Mainline crew. My engineer and I had arrived at work early that day (10/23), to find our railroad family reminiscing of that ol' "Budro," much of which we instinctively joined in with some wise jokes, or recalling some fond memories Bud was responsible for. It didn't seem like reality, what with Bud's belongings--hints of his timely existence in our railroad family--still evident throughout the office and shop as if waiting for his imminent return that would not come.

I recalled a lot about his unique character on that first day to work since his passing, most of which I would recall when I'd be out working the ground by myself. I continued to give some thought as I began to guide our shove move out from Bellefonte towards Milesburg. As our train continued to move, I would periodically speak over the radio to my engineer, as required to protect the shove, but I caught myself a few times expecting a response to my radio transmissions with the usual crackled mic-click followed by Bud's deep, carrying voice that became the most notable radio-face of the Nittany. It was because of this that he became well known among dispatchers who would call him by his name on the radio, and many a railroader out here did the same.

We finally shoved clear of the switch in Milesburg and my engineer stated he couldn't remember the last time he had run a train on the territory to Lock Haven; as it had always been Bud's role in our team. I could recall the few times I had Student Engineered under Bud's supervision, times that won't ever be regained. Times recalled when his former coworkers from his rail grinding days would crack through the radio to give their best regards to Bud when they were working in the area and they recognized his bellowing voice, to the times that when I'd ask him for train handling advice, he'd slip a wise joke in when you'd least expect it.

I have only been on the railroad 11 months so far, but everyone here has become much like family to me. Many of our memories of ol' Budro will be remembered, forever echoing within our thoughts like the old adage that still echoes through the Bald Eagle Valley upon the usual evening arrival of Bud's former Mainline crew. That so familiar echo that is usually the sound of Bud at the helm of his train, pulling it westward toward the golden sunset tossed before him, but alas, it's simply his fond memories thought to be reality in the mind's eye of his railroad family.

I consider it an honor and privilege to have worked with Bud for the short time that I did. He will be greatly missed.
May God bless your family, and to you Bud: 8 and sand, all clear signals.

Best regards,
Dakota Martin

Our lives cross the paths of so many people everyday and some go unnoticed, but Bud is one of those that will never be forgotten by me.
I work for the railroad with Norfolk Southern and have never personally met Bud, but spoke to him everyday on the radio and always felt I knew him for years. He was always professional and just a very genuine person. I always enjoyed those moments hearing his voice and I knew that I was working with a professional railroader.
My only regret is that I never got to meet him in person. He will be greatly missed.

Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us everyday, Unseen, Unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very clear.

We are so sorry to hear of Bud's passing. He was a fine fellow. He will be missed by many I'm sure. But if you must go, he went with the mountain air, the sound of the leaves blowing, watching for deer to come by. I can't think of a better itinerary to go to heaven with.
With sincere sympathy,
Kay and John
