Leon E. "Amos" Houseknecht

Leon E. “Amos” Houseknecht, 88, of 538 Rabbittown Rd., Pennsdale, died Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the Gatehouse, Williamsport.

Born July 14, 1926 in Hughesville, he was a son of the late Clayton and Carrie (Myers) Houseknecht.

Amos was a graduate of Hughesville High School. He served honorably with the U. S. Navy as a gunners mate upon the U S S Antietam aircraft carrier during World War II. He remained a member of the U S S Antietam Association. Amos worked as a foreman in the machine shop at Sprout-Waldron for 40 years and was a member of Sprout’s Quarter Century Club.

He was of Lutheran faith.

Amos was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #866, Muncy Valley, the Roland Ritter Post 268 American Legion, Muncy, the Muncy Lodge #299, F & AM and the Williamsport Consistory.

An avid golfer, he played with a three handicap, won the first championship at the White Deer Golf Course and was well known for playing in all the local golf tournaments.

Surviving are four children, Linda Fry and her husband, Ken, of Pennsdale, Keith W. Houseknecht, of Muncy, Rick Houseknecht and his wife, Karen, of Lock Haven and Nancy Vera and her husband, Javier, of Brownsville, TX; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Oliver, Jesse, George and Harley Houseknecht and one sister, Mary Houseknecht.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial with full military honors will be held in the Muncy Cemetery.
